The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
