Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
