Puzzling Pink Sludge on Secluded Tasmanian Coast Raises Fears of Possible Algal Bloom
Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with certain experts anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
Broad Occurrence Along Coastline
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60km south of the city. A like substance has also been documented on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Collected for Testing
Examples have been gathered and submitted to the regulatory body for testing. A official remarked that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to variations in minerals, warmth, precipitation or illumination".
"These blooms are at times called red or pink tides because the blooms can color the water red," the official noted. "Few algal blooms are dangerous, with numerous types acting as a primary source of energy for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."

Algae outbreaks are natural events but their occurrence has increased in the past few years, in part due to global warming and contamination that combine to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that usually function as the ocean's waste processors. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their colonies that interferes with the proper operation of marine environments.
These phenomena have been equated with marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as marine life is destroyed or smothered, providing more nutrients for the bloom.
Past Severe Event in a neighboring state
A southern state in the past confronted a devastating algae outbreak along its coastal region after a succession of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The bloom left beachgoers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across numerous types, according to government calculations.
Scientist Analysis on the Local Event
A marine expert, who assisted in examining the start of the previous outbreak stated, based on photos of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"There have been numerous of these events around Tasmania of late," she added.
The expert explained sea sparkle did not produce poisons similar to the organism involved in that devastating algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a bloom of the organism after a bloom of something else, or an event such as a marine breeding," she added.
Calls for Action and Safety Concerns
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in the state, said it appeared the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and indicated the fish farming business was the probable cause, referring to similar cases elsewhere.
"Therefore Tasmania needs to send a strong warning here, the government and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to analyse the examples we've gathered and we need to notify the community here," she said.
The scientist said she had worries for community health after experiencing a tingling sensation along her arms and face while being splashed with affected seawater.
Reports of Deceased Marine Life and Calls for Leadership Action
An conservation group has reported deceased sea creatures and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist describing the situation as an "environmental emergency" and urging the government head to see and "take control the effort that officials must be making".
"Officials needs to understand this is a crisis in the unfolding, commercially as well as environmentally."

Addressing journalists, the official commented he was uninformed of any connections between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, saying scientific testing was required before judgments could be drawn.
"It is vital to guarantee our waterways are ecologically sound and sustainable," he added.
"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our assets and we need to guarantee the people and our industry can operate side-by-side to utilize our seas efficiently and responsibly."
