Hurricane Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, delivering dangerous rapid inundation and mudslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been issued as Melissa produces up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th hurricane in this year's Atlantic season, which typically ends in late autumn.

Highest-Level Cyclone Danger

A Category 5 storm is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

While Melissa is set to reduce in intensity to a fourth-level hurricane before arriving at the island, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the overall impacts" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it hits the nation.

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall anticipated well in advance well before it moves across Jamaica's central region - possibly even the national capital - advisories state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"Several days of damaging winds and torrential rain are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening rapid water accumulation and multiple mudslides," urged meteorological officials.

The nation's leader the statesman stated: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are very concerned, and appropriately: you should be concerned.

"Yet the best way to handle nervousness and any apprehension and concern is to remain prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sand barriers and timber panels, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Regional Impact

Warnings are also in effect for parts of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is projected to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Melissa is projected to pass over Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic Ocean.
