Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Attention
The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.
